GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT REMS
There is a fun science competition for grades 3-5 called REMS, or Rendezvous Engineering, Math, and Science. The REMS Competition is the result of the brainstorming and coordination of Rendezvous Science Center CEO Ben Foroozan and La Jolla High School Science Team Head Coach and Physics teacher Martin Teachworth.
It is designed to be a FUN, EXCITING and LOW STRESS academic bowl competition for teams of 3rd to 5th grade students competing to determine the team with the most overall Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) knowledge. The purpose is to encourage interest in STEM, provide an outlet for interested students in a competitive but low stress environment, and help review for the Science and Mathematics portions of the California Content Standards tests.
Last year there were two fourth grade TPES teams in the competition and they had a lot of fun. This year we hope to have teams from third, fourth, and fifth grade. Each team consists of up to 5 members.
*Each Team Member will receive a REMS shirt & Certificate of Participation.
*Recognition Prizes will be awarded to the top teams at each level.
Fun prizes are also given out at the end of each competition.
The competition dates are:
Wednesday November 16, 2011
Wednesday January 18, 2012
Wednesday March 14, 2012
Wednesday April 25, 2012
All events are at 6:30 p.m. in the Parker Auditorium at La Jolla High School.
If your child is interested in joining a REMS team, please contact John May and he will email you additional information and the student registration form. The cost to participate is $15 per child. Ms Isom and John will organize the teams, but we need one parent per team to be responsible for getting the members to and from the competitions.
We welcome all interested scientists and will create a monthly learning/studying/strategy session in Awesome Science after school on Wednesdays at a time to be arranged.
For more information about the REMS program, go to the REMS Website.
If you have any additional questions please email John May.
