La Jolla Art and Wine Festival 2009

TPES and the TPES Foundation were proud to be a part of
the La Jolla Art and Wine Festival!

From Our Principal
Fall 2009

Parents and Community,
Welcome to what is sure to be another great year at Torrey Pines Elementary! I want to thank each of you who took the time to come to our first event, Curriculum Night. We had a great turnout, and we hope you heard what your child's year will consist of. My column in Branching Out will bring you additional information about TPES that is either new or that needs to be brought to your attention.

OUR API SCORE SOARS ONCE MORE!
I will begin with sharing some great news. Our Academic Performance Indicator (API) was just released, and our students outperformed those before them again. TPES earned a score of 968! This score, based on a range from 100 - 1,000, is provided by the State of California and directly reflects how our students did last spring when they took state mandated tests in grades 2-5. The test reflects student knowledge in literacy, mathematics, and science (grade 5 only). This score ranks us as the 6th highest achieving school in all of San Diego County and is a direct reflection of all the great teaching and high expectations school-wide, beginning with our kindergarten teachers and their academic program.

IT TAKES TEAM WORK
While our API is a measure of how we achieve success, a good question is what is a key component in getting there? I am a firm believer that we must be a strong team. The staff and I work very closely together to monitor student success and plan effective instruction for ALL students based on a variety of assessments throughout the year. You are also part of our team. Please communicate regularly with your child's teacher, speak English to your children as much as possible if they are learning the language, and help us keep discipline issues to a minimum by advocating for positive behavior both at school and at home.

STUDENT SAFETY COMES FIRST
I am sure you have seen the marquee in front of the school regarding traffic laws. At the request of San Diego Police Officer, Gina Spadacini, who works with the La Jolla schools, please know and obey all traffic laws when dropping off or picking up your child, The safety of every child is very important and we do not want to have any accidents that involve you or a child. Some of the laws that have been broken this year include illegal
u-turns, parking in a 3-minute zone or a bus zone, and walking across the middle of the street where there is not a marked crosswalk.

IMPORTANT FOUNDATION NEWS
Lastly, I encourage you to read our Foundation President's column carefully. John May explains in great detail the funding of schools and the importance of our Foundation. If TPES did not have support from the Foundation our curriculum supports and professional experts would not be possible.

Again, welcome to TPES and I look forward to another great year!
